jamel lanee is live with more >> reporter: good evening. like you said, u.s. 301 is back open. traffic is flowing smoothly now. here is a piece of that vehicle that was involved with that school bus crash. you can see it lying there on the ground. we do have some new details patrol. let's go to the eagle 8, hd video. as you can see, that was the scene around a little before 3:00 this afternoon. what we are told by fhp is that the bus, the school bus, was trying to make a turn. the truck driver was in a left hand lane trying to make a turn. a left hand turn when the person driving the truck was going southbound and the two vehicles collided. from what we are being told, a woman and a two-year-old was taken to the hospital as well as two children.

originally, we were told by the district it was five children, but now we know it is two. let's go to that exclusive cell phone video that we got our hands on just moments ago. you can see the shooter. he actually captured the moments a scary moment after this accident happened. we spoke with one child on the bus. >> when the bus is turning very fast an the car was coming very fast, i was putting on my phone. so then the crash happened, my head hit my phone and the seat. i got up and i looked and the car was crashed and i was very scared an worried. >> reporter: so, again, parents very upset. children very scared. we were told the driver of the bus was actually given a citation for failing to yield to traffic. again, those people who were

we know saint joseph south is right up here around the corner. again, this crash still under investigation. back to you. >> all right, jamel lanee live for us in hillsborough county. you can get developments for this story on your mobile device with our app. we have seen a terrifying spike of child abuse cases. in many of these awful stories it is the parents hurting or killing their own children. so 8 is on your side to find out why this is happening and what can be done about it. john talks to us from sarasota. >> reporter: these are stories i hate covering. children should be enjoying their lives, not worrying about their parents hurting them. but it is important to get the resources out. these parents are accused of killing their baby and burying him in a field.

stuffing her dead daughter in a freezer. officials say this dad smothered and killed his son on christmas eve. a shocking number of tampa bay parents have been arrested for child abuse. >> have you ever seen a trend like this? >> no. this is actually, i can tell you in all the years i have been prosecuting, the trend that we are seeing right now is alarming. >> reporter: state attorney ed says some of these are preventable. >> when you are angry, frustrated with your children, the most important thing you need to do is not take out your anger on your children. >> reporter: if parents are overwhelmed or if a child is removed from a home, there are resources available. like here at manatee children's services. they can provide help for distressed parents and treatment for abused children. >> why is this so important? >> it is the services they need. the clinical services, the treatment they need. they do heal and they get better and they turn into functioning adults.

can play a strong role in stopping this threat. we are all required by law to notify officials if we spot possible child abuse. >> and we need to motivate and become a movement of child abuse prevention. >> reporter: it takes a village to raise a child and it takes a community to stop child abuse. officials say there are a lot of reasons why this trend could be happening. it could be because some parents are struggling in the economy. they don't know any better about teaching or taking care of their children. there are also a lot of child abuse prevention programs that have been cut. it is important to get the word out that there are a lot of resources. >> what about the people who see this? a neighbor? a friend? a possible child abuse victim? what should they do? >> reporter: well the biggest tool is in their hand. their phone. they can call the florida abuse hot line. 1-800-96 abuse or call their

>> thank you john rogers. an incredible story of survival. a cape coral man used his body to shield his 89-year-old woman as a tornado ripped their home to park. the tornado was so strong their truck was tossed through the roof of the home. david hawk knew they were in trouble when the walls of the house started to shake. that is when he made a quick decision that may have saved both of their lives. >> i pulled her out of her chair. i laid over the top of her. about the time i got over the top of her things started exploding and glass started flying. i feel extremely lucky. you know, somebody up there was watching out for me. >> right now, hawk and his mom are staying with hawk's children who also live in cape coral. well, providing educational and work opportunities for children with developmental disabilities and a major water

priorities that got lost last year when lawmakers couldn't agree on anything. but as mike shows us, both are on track. >> reporter: senate president andy gardener has down's syndrome. he has champions giving the uniquely disabled a chance. he wants them to have a hope of a job and college education. but the hopes of thousands of families were dashed last spring when lawmakers couldn't agree on anything. they were accused of being as dysfunctional as the do- nothings in congress.

team i loved and poured all my sundays into years just leave. >> thrilled. thrilled when i heard it this afternoon. it is enthusiasm for los angeles. >> what a bittersweet situation. following a day of talks among nfl owners it was announced that the saint louis rams would pack up and move to los angeles. the city has not had an nfl franchise since the raiders left the area after the 1994 season. the rams will likely have a temporary home at the los angeles coliseum until the new stadium is ready in 2019. well, rams fans, saint louis native lindsey mastis have been monitoring reaction to the move. >> reporter: saint louis fought long and hard to keep the rams. as a native of the area i know how important sports teams are to the city, but i have also lived in los angeles and they have never stopped calling the rams their own. the los angeles mayor's office tweeted this new logo. it will be hard getting used to

gayle guyardo, newschannel8. >> a family for four can dine $100 for the workweek and have leftovers. they average $8 each, but if you hit nutrition mart on customer appreciation days you can pay even less. well, that's a look at the sky today. we see a lot of clouds around the area and will continue to. 59 degrees with a an east wind at 3 miles an hour. we see some dew point recovery here. 58 degrees, overcast, a little color there on the horizon. humidity at 43%. this is the view from sun city center. 58 degrees in hillsborough county. winds are calm at the moment. no precipitation. not a very pretty day overall. so, we have a developing area of low pressure that will arrive late thursday into friday morning. the storm chances, well, a few strong to severe thunderstorms

we will keep you up to date on that. another low will pass and then possibly sunday, computer models not in agreement on this. we will keep a slight chance of rain and see how this one develops. some of these could drop. tuesday morning a cool time. tony sent us a great picture from lakeland. in case you want to send us a photo. great photos to the sky there on the lake in lakeland this morning. at 9:00 p.m., 53 degrees. temperatures cool this evening. 50 at 7:00 a.m. 67 degrees at 3:00 p.m. mostly cloudy skies through the day. 59 degrees now. dew points in the 30s here today. 60 in downtown saint pete. that about tells the story there doesn't it? mostly cloudy skies. this flow coming up from the southwest, moving to the east. it just keeping the entire state socked in.

south florida. especially the keys. key west, very light stuff. a lot of upper level energy and a fast jet stream for us. subtropical storm alex. a long way away from us. it is rare to show this map this time of the year. very rare. we are thinking we are still doing some research, but we think 1978 is the last time a subtropical storm started this early. not a purely warm core tropical system. but here we are in florida and there is alex some distance away. interesting to talk about this in january. locally, thursday afternoon, the possibility of showers moving our way will start to see a developing chance of showers early friday morning including the possibility of some thunderstorms as an area of low pressure moves in from the west. storms, a few of which may be severe. again, we will keep you posted should that happen. obviously. and then for friday evening everything kind of moves on out

things quiet down. skys will start to clear up. forecast lows are cool. we will have clouds around. i think last night, that really helped to hold up our forecast low temperature by about four degrees. clouds mostly mid level clouds, high clouds to some small degree can reflect heat back in the atmosphere. high for tomorrow. 68 degrees. bartow. 65 degrees crystal river. a lot of 60s , a lot of clouds. 55 degrees for the evening. 50 degrees for a low temperature overnight. would be cooler if the skies were clear, but, again, the skies are socked in at the moment. 75 degrees on saturday. rain chances highest, the early part of friday with the rain chance possible storm chance that we mentioned headed through the holiday weekend. 59 degrees. tuesday, 60 degrees, wednesdays, 64. the rain chances definitely falling off.

a teacher's sick-out closes nearly 60 schools in detroit, michigan. students are staying home as their teachers continue an organized protest. what they describe add deplorable teaching conditions in detroit schools. now, the teachers say there is mold in some buildings. rodents, leaks with pose safety hazards. >> the water leaks through here and it rains in the worst day. on a rainy day, you have water throughout this entire hallway. >> the school board says without question, there are problems with some of detroit's public school facilities. however, they say keeping kids out of the classroom is not the answer. meanwhile, a hawaiian lawmaker is coming up with a cultural solution to provide shelter for the homeless using grass shacks. they intend for ask for land and believe it could be done tastefully.
